ROUND ROCK, Texas – Jose Felix drilled a two out single into center field to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Round Rock Express a 5-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Sunday night.

Round Rock scored first with a pair of infield hits in the first inning. Yangervis Solarte singled and scored the games first run.

The Zephyrs evened the score at one in the bottom of the sixth inning. Donovan Solano singled, advanced to second on a ground-out and scored on a Joe Mahoney RBI single.

New Orleans threatened in the top of the seventh with two men on and one out when the Express lifted their starter Scott Richmond. Wilmer Font entered the game and retired Gorkys Hernandez and Solano to end the threat.

With two men on and two outs, Felix singled home the go-ahead runfor Round Rock. Leury Garcia doubled home two more runs and the Express grabbed a 4-1 lead.

Font earned the win working two thirds of an inning. Z’s starter Duane Below took the defeat pitching six and two thirds and allowed four runs on eight hits.

The Zephyrs fall to 41-43 on the year and a season-high seven games back of the Express. Round Rock wins the weekend series three games to one and the season series 9-7.

Game Notes –Donovan Solano extended his hit streak to 17 games with a sixth inning single. He has a hit in all 17 games with New Orleans this season, longest hit streak this season by a Zephyr. The hit streak is the longest for the Zephyrs since 2010, when Brian Barden hit in 21 consecutive.

METAIRIE – With runs proving to be hard to come by, Kevin Mattison took matters into his own hands on Sunday.

Mattison tagged from third and scored on a pop up down the third base line in the seventh inning, providing the winning run as the New Orleans Zephyrs overcame a two-hour rain delay and squeaked past the Nashville Sounds, 2-1.

With the score tied 1-1, Mattison roped a double down the right field line to lead off the seventh, then moved to third on a fly out by Donovan Solano. Nashville moved the infield up, and Bryan Petersen lifted a fly ball into foul territory in shallow left field. Mattison tagged at third as third baseman Ozzie Chavez made an over-the-shoulder catch, and slid under the tag of catcher Anderson De La Rosa to plate the go-ahead run.

Nashville manager Mike Guerrero was ejected for arguing the play.

After Jonathan Albaladejo worked the second of his two flawless innings of relief, Chris Hatcher retired the side in order to earn his Minor League Baseball-leading 24th save.

Both starting pitchers lasted only an inning due to heavy rains that soaked Zephyr Field for 90 minutes. Z’s starter Brian Flynn had recorded four outs when the game went into a delay and did not return, nor did Sounds starter Hiram Burgos, who was making a rehab start from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rett Varner pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief when the game resumed, and Zach Kroenke worked out of trouble in the second and fourth innings to keep the game tied.

New Orleans loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Gorkys Hernandez’s tapper in front of the plate was turned into an inning-ending double play. The Zephyrs had 10 hits, including a 3-for-3 effort from Jake Smolinski, but finished 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 baserunners.

The Sounds broke through in the fifth on a home run by former Tulane start Josh Prince, his sixth of the season. Joe Mahoney evened the score with his first homer of the year to lead off the sixth.

Albaladejo (3-2) got the win, as five Zephyrs pitchers combined to hold the Sounds to three hits. Kroenke (4-9) was charged with the loss, scattering two runs and seven hits across five innings.

The Zephyrs and Sounds continue the series on Monday at 7 p.m.

METAIRIE – The New Orleans Zephyrs collected a hit in each of the first eight innings on Saturday night, but bounced into four double plays and dropped the series opener to the Nashville Sounds, 1-0.

The Z’s wasted a strong effort by starter Doug Mathis (2-6), who held the Sounds scoreless on two hits over the first five innings before encountering trouble in the sixth. Hainley Statia reached on an infield single with one out and Mathis walked Khris Davis. After striking out Blake Lalli for the second out, Mathis allowed a line drive single to left by Sean Halton to drive in the game’s only run.

Halton continued his hot hitting against Zephyrs pitching. In nine games this season, Halton has 14 hits, with three home runs and nine RBI.

New Orleans threatened throughout against Sounds starter Johnny Hellweg (7-4), who exited after six scoreless innings and only 68 pitches. Donovan Solano singled with one out in the first to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, but Bryan Petersen hit into an inning-ending double play.

Jake Smolinski singled and stole second with two outs in the second, but was stranded when Matt Downs lined out to right field.

Kyle Skipworth’s leadoff single in the third was erased on a double play by pitcher Doug Mathis, and Joe Mahoney grounded into an inning-ending twin killing in the fourth. A leadoff single by Gil Velazquez in the sixth was wasted on the night’s fourth double play, this time by Solano.

Travis Webb and Rob Wooten each struck out three batters out of Nashville’s bullpen to conplete the shutout, with Wooten earning his 15th save. New Orleans has been held scoreless eight times this season, the most in the Pacific Coast League.

Mathis was charged with the loss, allowing one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

The Zephyrs and Sounds resume the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Bryan Petersen picked up three hits and drove home a pair of runs as the New Orleans Zephyrs won their third consecutive by defeating the Iowa Cubs 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Brian Flynn pitched six and two third innings allowed three runs on six hits and earned his first road win of the season. Flynn (2-4) struck out a season-high eight batters.

New Orleans scored a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Jake Smolinski scored on a Koyie Hill two out RBI double. The Cubs took the lead in the third inning scoring a pair of runs.

The Zephyrs tied the game in the fourth scoring a run on three hits. The Z’s took the lead the fifth inning scoring a run on three hits. A two out double from Petersen brought home the run.

A pair of runs extended the New Orleans lead in the seventh. A wild inning had the Cubs throwing out a Zephyr at the plate. Gorkys Hernandez scored on a wild-pitch that was just a few feet from home plate and the catcher took a moment to find. Petersen singled to score Gil Velazquez to make it 5-2.

The Z’s offense out-hit the Iowa Cubs 13-8 in the game. Iowa starter Chris Rusin (4-5) pitched seven innings and allowed five runs on 12 hits in the loss.

Chris Hatcher slammed the door in the ninth with his league leading 17th save.

Game Notes – The Zephyrs added pitcher Jordan Conley from Class A Jupiter and placed Ben Lasater on the disabled list. The 17 saves for Hatcher leads all of Minor League Baseball. The New Orleans bullpen has worked 16 consecutive scoreless innings.

Coming Up: The Zephyrs and Iowa Cubs will meet Monday evening in the third game of the four game set. New Orleans will start LH Duane Below against I-Cubs RH Nick Struck at 7:05. RADIO: WMTI 106.1 FM “The Ticket”
