TUCSON, AZ – Daniel Robertson drilled a two run fifth inning double to vault the Tucson Padres to a 6-2 win over the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Z’s and Padres were tied at one when Tucson managed a lead-off walk before a Zephyrs throwing error leaving a pair of runners on base. Robertson doubled just fair inside the first base line to scored the go-ahead runs.

Tucson starter Keyvius Sampson pitched six innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck-out six hitters, earning his first win for the Padres. Sam Dyson took the loss pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits.

Rob Brantly and Jordan Brown each picked up a pair of hits for the Zephyrs.

New Orleans, which has dropped two in a row, fell to 60-61 on the season.

Game Notes – Bryan Petersen’s seven game hit streak was snapped. Petersen was hitless in three plate appearances but drew a pair of walks.

Coming Up – The final game of the series from Tucson is set for Sunday at 9:05. New Orleans will start RH Jarod Rogers (6-3, 4.80) vs. Tuscon RH Anthony Bass (2-5, 6.67). RADIO: WMTI 106.1 FM “The Ticket”

z’s  baseball  recap

ALBUQUERQUE – Brian Flynn pitched seven shut-out innings as the New Orleans Zephyrs held off a late rally from Albuquerque to defeat the Isotopes 3-2 in front of 6,598 fans at Isotopes Park.  The win snapped a three game slide for the Z’s who improve to 53-56 and eight games back of first-place Albuquerque.

Flynn allowed four hits over seven innings allowed no runs and struck-out seven to earn his fourth win of the season.  Flynn has not allowed a run in his last two starts spanning 14.2 innings.

Gil Velazquez led off the fourth inning with a walk, Jordan Brown followed up with a double and Velazquez scored on an errant throw to the infield from right fielder Alex Castellanos.  The run was unearned for starter Steven Fife who suffered the defeat.

The Z’s added a run in the seventh inning.  Jake Smolinski doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Kyle Jensen sacrifice fly.  Smolinski drilled a ninth inning home run to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the ninth, the Isotopes rallied scoring a pair of runs. Scott Van Slyke led off the inning with a walk off of Chris Hatcher.  Chili Buss lined a single into left field and Justin Sellers drove both home on a double into right field.  Sellers advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt.

Hatcher induced John Baker to an infield pop fly and Rusty Ryal struck-out looking to end the game. He earned his league leading 28th save.  The Isotopes lead the series 2-1 with the finale on Monday afternoon.

Game Notes –The Z’s have homered in 11 of their last 12 games. New Orleans is now 24-19 in one run games, and 61 of the Z’s 109 games have been decided by two runs or less.  Kevin Kouzmanoff snapped a seven game hit streak.  The Marlins promoted pitcher Steven Ames and the Z’s added reliever Scott McGough.

Kyle Skipworth homered twice for the Z’s in the game. In fact, New Orleans scored two first inning runs on a Kevin Kouzmanoff home run for the early edge.

Albuquerque took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning.

In the second game, the Zephyrs scored two first inning runs to grab the lead once again. Then, just like in the opener, Albuquerque answered with a big fourth inning, plating four to take the lead 4-3.

Kevin Kouzmanoff and Jake Smolinski homered for the Z’s in a losing effort.

New Orleans out-hit the Isotopes in both games.

The Zephyrs fall to 52-56 and a season-high nine games back of first place Albuquerque.

Game Notes – The multi-home run game for Skipworth is his first for the Z’s and second of the season for New Orleans. The Zephyrs have played four doubleheaders this season and have been swept in three of them. New Orleans committed a season-high four errors in game one. The Z’s are now 23-19 in one run games while 60 of the Z’s 108 games have been decided by two runs or less.

Coming Up-The Zephyrs and Isotopes meet in third game of set at 7:05 Sunday. The Z’s will start LH Brian Flynn (3-10, 3.36) vs. RH Stephen Fife (1-1, 4.58) RADIO: WMTI 106.1 FM “The Ticket”.

z’s  baseball  recap

METAIRIE – Johnny Hellweg allowed two hits in six scoreless innings, and Robinzon Diaz hit a three-run homer to lead the Nashville Sounds past the New Orleans Zephyrs, 8-5 on Saturday night.

Hellweg, who had worked 11 scoreless innings in a pair of wins over the Zephyrs earlier this season, did not allow a hit until Z’s pitcher Duane Below reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt that eluded catcher Anderson De La Rosa in the third inning. Jordan Brown’s one-out single in the fifth was the only other hit against Hellweg (8-4), who walked four and struck out six.

Below struck out the side in order in the top of the first, but struggled through the next three innings. De La Rosa put Nashville on the board in the second with an RBI single, and scored a batter later on Cole Garner’s single up the middle.

Hunter Morris singled to lead off the fourth inning, and scored on De La Rosa’s two-out double down the left field line.

Rett Varner relieved Below in the fifth and surrendered a three-run shot to Diaz, doubling Nashville’s lead to 6-0.

The Zephyrs finally broke through against the Sounds bullpen in the seventh, courtesy of back-to-back, two-out RBI doubles by Gorkys Hernandez and Chris Valaika.

Nashville added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. A bad-hop grounder to third by pinch-hitter Hainley Statia opened the door for a two-run single by Kentrail Davis.

Hernandez blasted a three-run homer off Michael Olmsted in the bottom of the ninth, but Nashville’s All-Star closer Rob Wooten came on to record the final two outs.

The Zephyrs and Sounds conclude the series on Sunday at 6 p.m.
